CHOOSING THE RIGHT GLOVE

Purpose built from the hand up, Makita set out to develop its range of high-performance hand protection gloves based on clearly defined abrasion, cut, impact, and puncture performance property standards. Operating here in the United States of America, Makita designed and built our range based off the American National Standards Institute/International Safety Equipment Association (ANSI/ISEA) 105-2016 American National Standard for Hand Protection Classification, a voluntary standard from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), who oversees standards and conformity assessment activities in the United States. When choosing the right glove for your needs, these ratings will allow you to compare performance levels between gloves.

Samples of the palm material is placed on a Tabor machine which spins the sample in a circular motion under weighted abradants that look very similar to grinding wheels. Every full circle made is considered 1 cycle count. The sample spins until a hole is formed and a final cycle count is applied against the table.

Using a Tocodynamometer, AKA TDM Machine, a weighted razor blade is used to cut a 20mm distance across the surface of the glove’s material. The test is repeated 15 times under 3 varied gram weights to form an average. That average or mean is used against the scale shown in the table which assigns a protective cut level based on “distance cut” and “weight used to perform cut”.

The greater the performance level, the greater the impact reduction. (1 kN = 224.8 lbs. of force)

Sample glove pair is cut in half and the back of the hand is placed on an anvil. Using a force gauge that is connected below the anvil, a striker with a force of 5 Joules is dropped on the required back-of-hand locations, knuckles and the fingers and thumb.

On both gloves, knuckles are tested 4 times and the finger and thumbs are tested 5 times. The average of the knuckle tests are compared to the average of the 10 finger tests with the lower performing average of the two yielding the final impact testing score.

Using an Instron machine a sample of the glove’s material is placed between two plates. Using a weighted pen shaped probe is dropped at height until penetration of the sample fabric is achieved. The weight used which ranges between 10 and 150 newtons of resistance is used against the scale in the table to provide a protective puncture rating.
